Somalia: Unwavering Courage by Human rights defender (Zakarie)

Zakarie Y. Abdirahman: A Courageous Advocate Facing Life-Threatening Risks in Somalia – Urgent Call for Protection and Support

Zakarie Y. Abdirahman: serves as the program manager at the Coalition of Somali Human Rights Defenders (CSHRDS) www.cshrds.org and is a senior human rights researcher working extensively in both urban and rural areas across Somalia. Well recognized by international human rights groups (https://www.frontlinedefenders.org/en/profile/zakarie-y-abdirahman).

His tireless nonviolent advocacy for human rights has focused on documenting abuses, amplifying the voices of marginalized communities, and challenging impunity for violations committed by both state and non-state actors.

However, his unwavering commitment to justice has come at a grave personal cost. Zakarie has faced repeated death threats from armed groups and individuals opposing his work, including those tied to the very systems of power he seeks to hold accountable. These threats have created constant insecurity for him and his family, as he is often targeted for his outspoken stance against human rights violations. His advocacy has also led to multiple life-threatening incidents, as well as arbitrary arrests, harassment, and intimidation by authorities seeking to silence dissent.

The dangers Zakarie encounters are further compounded by the volatile environment in Somalia, where human rights defenders are often at heightened risk of violence, enforced disappearances, and extrajudicial killings. His work requires exceptional courage and resilience, yet his safety remains precarious. It is imperative that Zakarie receives sustained support and protection to continue his essential efforts to advance human rights, accountability, and justice in Somalia and the Horn of Africa region.
