In Somaliland, Somalia, environmental defender Axmed is facing severe repercussions e.g. death threats and arbitrary arrests for his efforts to protect a crucial reserve area for indigenous community in Baki, located in the Awdal region.
This grassland reserve is essential for local livestock and hosts a variety of animal and plant species. The local government has decided to destroy this reserve to make way for a development project by DP World, a multinational logistics company. The images below show the land before and during the destruction for alleged development:
Axmed has been an outspoken advocate for his community’s rights and environmental preservation, opposing the government’s decision. In response to his activism, he has faced threats and has been placed under house arrest. This situation underscores the dangers faced by environmental defenders and highlights the ongoing conflict between development initiatives and environmental conservation.
Adding to the controversy, DP World has been involved in numerous allegations of human rights violations and illegal arms trade in conflict zones. This background further complicates the development project, raising concerns about the company’s practices and the potential impact on local communities and the environment. Despite these challenges, Axmed remains committed to protecting the natural habitat and advocating for his community’s rights.
