Vienna/Cairo/Hargeisa — A Somali teenager who reportedly survived trafficking and years of vulnerability in Europe is now facing renewed risks of forced marriage, coercion, and gender-based violence, according to the Coalition of Somali HRDs (CSHRD), which is calling for urgent intervention by Austrian authorities.

The young woman, Muna Ali, born in 2008, has endured a life marked by displacement, family separation, and exploitation. Human rights defenders say her case highlights the continuing dangers faced by girls and young women caught in trafficking networks and vulnerable migration routes stretching from the Horn of Africa to Europe.
A Childhood Fractured: Separation in Addis Ababa
Muna’s life began in a fragile peace. Born in 2008, she was raised by her loving mother, Sahra Adan, whose survival and care for her daughter were made possible through the dedicated financial support of Sahra’s brothers. Desperate to build a safer future away from the instability of Somalia, Sahra fled the country with her little girl.
However, their bond was tragically severed in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. In a devastating turn of events, the toddler Muna was separated from her mother and left in the care of her father, Ali Hassan.
Separated from her child, Sahra’s journey grew unimaginably dark. She fell into the hands of brutal human traffickers in Libya, where she suffered long captivity and unspeakable torture. Though she eventually escaped to Cairo, Egypt, Sahra was left physically broken and deeply traumatized by the horrors she endured. Meanwhile, back in East Africa, the vulnerable Muna was not safe. Instead of being protected by her paternal family, she became a target for opportunistic individuals.
Betrayal and Trafficking: The Journey to Austria
In 2013, at just five years old, Muna was stolen from her life and trafficked across international borders. A woman named Naima Mohamed (originally from Hargeisa) smuggled the young child into Austria.
For years, Muna existed in a state of effective captivity, enduring psychological torment, isolation, and exploitation under Naima’s strict control. The little girl who had already lost her mother was now entirely at the mercy of strangers in a foreign land.

Eventually, a glimmer of hope appeared. Muna was rescued from her immediate captors and placed with a compassionate Austrian foster family. Under their care, she finally began to heal, learn, and experience the safety and dignity that had been stolen from her as a toddler. But the ghosts of her past were not done hunting her.
The Current Threat: A Coordinated Predatory Network
Now, as a young woman, Muna’s safety is shattered once again. Because of her vulnerability, a network of predators claiming to be relatives of her biological father, Ali Hassan, have emerged from the shadows. They do not view Muna as a human being who has survived a lifetime of trauma; they view her as property to be exploited.
Muna is currently facing an imminent, severe risk of gender-based violence and forced marriage from two primary aggressors acting in tandem:
The Forced Marriage Plot (Italy): Shamso Hassan, currently residing in Italy (Tel: +39 328 566 9606), is actively orchestrating a forced marriage, intending to legally and physically bind Muna to her own son against her will.
The Local Predator (Austria): Hassan Ahmed, currently residing in Austria (Tel: +43 681 1080 1719), is aggressively pursuing Muna, seeking to claim her for himself and exploit her within the country.
The Silencing of a Mother
Meanwhile, in Cairo, Muna’s mother, Sahra Adan, lives as a frail refugee, her body and mind deeply scarred by the untreated trauma of the Libyan torture camps. Rather than finding peace, Sahra is currently receiving severe threats from these exact individuals. They are terrorizing the ailing mother from afar, attempting to blackmail and silence her so she cannot advocate for her daughter or expose their criminal network.
An Urgent Call to Action: CSHRD Demands Intervention
The Coalition of Somali Human Rights Defenders (CSHRD) has officially raised the alarm on this case, classifying it as an active, transnational human trafficking and gender-based violence emergency.
The CSHRD Demands:
1. Immediate Austrian Police and Social Services Intervention: Austrian authorities must step in immediately to guarantee Muna Ali’s physical protection, ensuring she is shielded from Hassan Ahmed as well as Shamso and any attempts to abduct or coerce her into a forced marriage.
2. Criminal Investigation: Police must investigate Shamso Hassan (Italy) and Hassan Ahmed (Austria) for posing new threats against Muna and Naima Mahamed in Austria, (Tel Nr. +436769500017/+4368864825146) for human trafficking, domestic violence, coercion, extortion and threatening Muna mother.
3. Protection for Sahra Adan: Austrian government, International human rights organizations and the UNHCR in Cairo must provide immediate protection and psychological support to Sahra Adan, shielding her from the transnational threats meant to silence her.
Muna Ali has spent her entire life surviving the worst humanity has to offer—from parental separation in Ethiopia to the dark underbelly of European trafficking networks. She deserves the right to her own future, her own body, and her own freedom. The authorities must act before the shadows claim her again.
The Coalition of Somali HRDs (CSHRD) has sounded the alarm over the case of Muna Ali, warning that she faces a serious risk of forced marriage, coercion, gender-based violence, and exploitation. Meanwhile, her mother, Sahra Adan—a survivor of trafficking, torture, and prolonged abuse—is reportedly facing threats and intimidation while continuing to suffer the lasting effects of severe trauma. CSHRD has classified the case as an urgent protection emergency and is calling on Austrian authorities and international protection actors to act without delay. The organization further urges immediate measures to safeguard the rights, safety, and wellbeing of both Muna Ali and Sahra Adan.
